PV Comets Premier League - Open Division 1

The Spring season is about to begin, with new coach Leigh leading the team all the girls are looking forward to a successful season.
With all 9 players out to impress and secure a starting 7 position the season should be interesting.

About the coach... Leigh Middlin
I was born many, many years ago in Ballarat. I lived there with my folks and younger sister til moving down to Melbourne for uni and have lived in and around Carlton ever since.
I currently work at the Australian Bureau of Statistics and it's just as exciting as it sounds.
I had my first experiences in Ballarat both watching and playing netty as I occasionally filled in for my sister's mixed netball team and if I wasn't playing, I was more than happy to tell her what she'd done wrong.
I coached some junior basketball in Ballarat, done a bit of work in the coach's box for an AFL team and have played in a variety of mixed netball teams since moving down to Melbourne, usually at one of the two ends of the court.

Given that the season will almost be over before it begins, it's hard to put any lofty expectations in place, especially as we'll all still be working each other out a little bit for much of it. Fortunately our core of experienced players should make the transition a smooth one.
Ideally I'd like to see players settling into positions, building fitness levels and to work on some systems that may help us for the longer season ahead.
And winning more games than we lose is always nice!

Match Reports
Round 1
PV Comets v Hume Thunder
(According to us) We won 9-6, 16-16, 22-25, 30-29
A great effort from all players to defeat last season's premiers.
We got off to a quick start which seems consistent with last season but the most encouraging aspect was the way we managed to fight back after going three goals down at three quarter time. Last season Hume may have run away with the game but the hard work in the final term paid dividends.
Defence was solid with Kaz & Britt managing to contain the goalers and provide drive from the back, through several intercepts, tipped balls and strong leads.
Centre court was steady with Cass providing tremendous energy in the Centre for the whole game, Nell was great defensively despite her opponent's best efforts and Shan & Jac gave our goalers passing options.

Our shooters were fantastic with Kate leading strongly throughout the match & Ciara able to finish the second and final quarters successfully with high-pressure shots.
Almost all positives coming out of the match with the only real issues to address is movement & spacing in our forward third & keeping our distance defensively. But all in all, a very promising start to the season.

Ciara        16/21        76%                Kate        14/19        74%

2 Kate

Round 2

PV Comets v DC Force

We won 8-8, 18-13, 27-22, 35-29

A comfortable win although it could have been a lot more had we played with the same level of intensity as last week. Aside from a five minute burst at the end of the second quarter, we were too careless when we had possession and this would have been punished by a better team. Still, it's an undefeated start to the season and a comfortable win with areas still to be improved upon can only be a good thing.

Special mention must be made for Janelle's defensive intensity, particularly in the first half, and Jac's passing to the goalers really helped break the game open and the goals both shot at a high percentage missing only 6 between them,

Ciara        21/23        91%                Kate        14/18        78%

3 Janelle

2 Jac

1 Ciara

Round 3
PV Comets v Banyule Allies
We won 7-7, 17-12, 26-15, 36-22

A very good effort, especially given we only had the bare seven players. The intensity in the middle two quarters and in the last 5 minutes was fantastic.
Defenders were tremendous in the middle two quarters, only conceding eight goals though their shooters received too many second chances in the first quarter.
Centres were steady throughout the game, through Cass's efforts in WD in the third quarter effectively put the game away.
Shooters managed to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the centres and also worked very well with each other.
Ciara        17/21        81%                Kate        19/23        83%
3 Kate
2 Cass
1 Kaz

Round 4
PV Comets v Nillumbik Pulse
We lost 9-11, 15-24, 21-34, 31-42

First loss for the year as we ran into a very good team.
There was a real chance of us getting blown out of the water as they'd doubled our score at one stage in the third quarter but we managed to pull things back in a really gutsy effort.
Defenders played their best game of the season (despite the scoreline) given the constant pressure they were under.
Centres were possibly a touch outclassed though Shan's efforts in centre in the last quarter must be commended.
Kate probably had to work too far up the court which left Julia to be double teamed a bit too much, although she performed very well.

Julia         22/27        81%                Kate        9/13        69%

3 Britt
2 Kaz
1 Shan

Round 5
Plenty Valley v St Albans

We won 10-4, 15-12, 26-16, 33-20

A great victory, defensively our best effort for the year. Though we were a bit careless with the ball through the centre, especially in the second quarter (they actually had one more shot than us despite our number of interceptions)
We were solid once we had the ball in the attacking circle with Julia shooting over 90%. Britt, Kaz & Sarah were intimidating in the defensive circle with their goalers only shooting at 47% for the game. Jess showed plenty of promise in her first taste of seniors as well.

Julia        23/25        92%                Kate        10/17        59%

3 Janelle
2 Britt
1 Sarah

Round 7
PV Comets v Deekin - Mena 1
We lost 5-14, 10-18, 16-28, 25-37

Sadly , the game was shot to bits after the first quarter with them able to take full advantage of their opportunities (14/17). Though our goalers did a good job once the ball got into the circle, it just didn't get down there enough with their shooters getting too many second chances. Passing let us down a touch due to not taking the first (and often best) option. Special mention must be made of Loz and Sarah's great efforts in their first games of senior netball for the year.

Sarah        13/17        76%                Kate        12/17        71%

3. Jac
2. Sarah
1. Britt

Round 8
PV Comets v Bayside 1
We won 8-6, 22-14, 32-25, 44-34

A tremendous second quarter set us up for a good victory. Our goalers were almost automatic, shooting nearly a combined 85% for the game. A few turnovers were made from our centres due to forcing the pace of the game. The defence worked very well with Kaz and Britt getting plenty of tip aways and deflections and not giving their shooters many second chances.

Sarah        15/22        68%                Juls        28/29        97%

3. Jac
2. Britt
1. Juls
